Janet McKenzie's art comes to Arlington in Eastertide

In April, artist Janet McKenzie will pack up several of the luminous, sometimes haunting paintings of holy people that she is renowned for, and will drive them down from her home in Vermont to Arlington, where they'll go on display for the April 10 music and art retreat that is part of the Order of St. Anne's centennial celebration this year.

"I am always suprised when the word 'provocative' surfaces with regard to my work," she said in a recent interview.

It took 12 whole seconds for the world to collapse, Sister Marjorie Raphael, SSM says of the Jan. 12 earthquake that brought down the Society of St. Margaret's Convent and much of Port-au-Prince.  Read her full account in the latest "St. Margaret's Quarterly."

With Episcopalians' continued generosity, Episcopal Relief and Development, through the Diocese of Haiti, continues to supply food and water and has secured delivery vehicles, as well as fuel and camping supplies to provide shelter.  These efforts are expanding the diocese's capacity to help 25,000 survivors at more than 60 sites.

"The earthquake of Jan. 12 was our baptism; now is our new creation," the Diocese of Haiti's bishop, Jean Zache Duracin, writes in this March 5 letter to the Episcopal Church.  "In this Lenten season, the season of repentance, conversion and intense prayers, we ask you to remember our diocese and all the people of Haiti in this difficult moment.  We also ask you to continue to support us by your prayers and your gifts, so that by Eastertide, we will be able to sing together with great joy, 'Alleluia!  He is Risen!'"

Jude Harmon
Jude Harmon, a postulant for ordination in this diocese and a former Young Adult Service Corps missioner in the Diocese of Haiti, is available to speak at church services and events.  Harmon had been in Haiti for four months at the time of the earthquake and has a moving story to tell.  Contact him directly to make arrangements (860-389-6408 or eighth.day.dawning@gmail.com).  Check out his blog here.
Learning Event-goers 'get out of the God box'

The Rev. Leslie Sterling coaches a small group in discerning how their individual gifts for ministry match up with need in the world.
Get out of the "God box" and work on ways to help members "be church away from the church's buildings," guest speaker Chip Stokes urged the 150 people who gathered for the diocese's annual spring learning event on March 6 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston.

Baptismal Font
Help this baptismal font find a new church home:
The diocese is in the process of finalizing the sale of the church property that housed the former St. Alban's Church in Lynn.  Several items from the church building need a new home, including a pipe organ, a baptismal font and pews.  View photos of the available items here.

Steve Pierce (spierce@diomass.org) can provide more information and arrange viewings, but he needs to hear from you by Tuesday, March 23.  Items must be removed from the building by Tuesday, April 20.

Two Joans and a dream come true
Joan Gay and Joan Metcalfe (at right) of St. Andrew's Church in Framingham shared a dream across the years of their nursing and social work careers.

"We always said that when we retired we wanted to start a parish health ministry.  So here we are," Gay says.

What they had in mind was broader than the practical care provided by parish nursing programs. "Bridging is a good word for what this is about.  It connects all the players, the clergy giving pastoral care and the medical professionals with parishioners and their families," Gay explains.

"It gets back to the practice of the church in early times of people taking care of one another within the community," Metcalfe adds.

The two Joans, as they refer to themselves, have their ministry up and running at St. Andrew's and hope other parishes in the diocese will follow suit.  They are hosting a gathering on April 24 at St. Andrew's for anyone interested in learning more (registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by a program and brown-bag lunch).  RSVP by calling 508-875-5095.

Charles River Deanery youth try "Living on the Edge"
Forty middle school kids and their adult mentors in the Charles River Deanery recently had an 18-hour experience of what it might be like to be homeless.

The group met on March 5 at St. Paul's Church in Newton Highlands and, in teams, went on a scavenger hunt through the neighborhood, looking for loose change, redeemable bottles and cans, cheap meals and places to use the bathroom and make phone calls.  Then, back at the church, each team made a "trash castle" out of cardboard boxes, plastic bags, newspapers and duct tape and tried to sleep out for at least a couple of hours.

"For me, last weekend's event was summarized by a kid from St. Paul's, Brookline, who stumbled in from outdoors at 3 a.m. and said in a tired voice, 'Being homeless is so hard.'  It is, and with God's help, maybe someday we will find a way to house everyone.  In the meantime, also with God's help, we stand with those living on the edge, offering them the love and hope of Christ," Taylor said.

"Living on the Edge" is the third of five events planned by the Charles River Deanery Youth Collaborative this year.  Now in its third year, the collaborative is a ministry with middle school kids who attend parishes in Brookline, Dover, Needham, Newton and Wellesley.

Veterans ministry survey invites your response
Members of the diocese involved in ministry with veterans would like to know what congregations are offering and what they need to reach out to veterans and their families.  They hope to find ways to share projects and ideas.  They've set up a simple online survey here to get information from congregations who are involved or interested in this ministry.  Questions can be directed to the Rev. David Sullivan at ltcrtd@gmail.com.
