Rushing winds, tongues of flame:
What if the Spirit granted our Pentecost prayers?
Pentecost Flames "Isn't it amazing how much easier it is to talk about our politics or even our favorite meals than to talk about what Jesus means to us?" the Rev. Tony Clavier asks in Episcopal Life Online's feature reflection for May 23.

"As we hear the Pentecost readings about rushing winds and tongues of fire, strange 'languages' and reflections on leaving safety to tell the story of Jesus and baptize to the ends of the earth, perhaps we look forward to those interminable Sundays after Pentecost when we can settle down and forget 'enthusiasm' and earn our keep as the 'chosen frozen,'" he continues.  "But what if, just if, the Holy Spirit took our hymns and prayers seriously?"

Church sends missioner to serve in Central Ecuador
Maureen Capillo
Maureen Capillo
Maureen Capillo of St. James's Church in Cambridge departs in July for a three-year appointment as an Episcopal Church missioner in Quito, Ecuador.  With support from the Diocese of Massachusetts, she will serve in the Diocese of Central Ecuador, assisting groups and individual volunteers on short-term mission trips there.

"I will accompany groups during their stay, and expect to be in communication with them upon their return, in hopes of building stronger and more long-term relationships between North Americans and the church in Ecuador," she explains.

The move to Quito is a return for Capillo.  She spent six months there in 2008 teaching English and helping with economic and leadership development projects in area churches.  She follows fellow St. James's Church members Chris and Trish Morck who also are missioners in Central Ecuador.
Jubilee supporters fast and feast during water crisis
JubileeThe diocese's second annual Jubilee Celebrates Africa party was just getting underway at the Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington on May 1 when the police showed up with a shut-down order.

The major water main break that for 2 1/2 days compromised the water supply for Boston and 29 other communities, including Lexington, had just happened, and the police were concerned about public health.

Even though Jubilee's meal for 150 had been prepared elsewhere the day before and was known by organizers to be safe, it could not be served.  The group had to be out of the building by 7 p.m.

About 80 people stayed, and in the time remaining, continued with the planned auction and sale of African handcrafts.

The dinner and auction event is the primary fundraiser for the diocese's mission projects in East Africa devoted to health care, education and economic development.

"Church, we're fasting tonight, but we're also feasting," Bishop Bud Cederholm told the group, according to the Rev. Maggie Geller, Jubilee's coordinator.

"There was a lot of fellowship and rallying to support Jubilee," she said.  "People were faithful and generous."  She estimated that $10,000 was raised, about half of last year's total.

"There are people in the world with real, lasting problems, so this was nothing in comparison," she said.

The unserved food was donated to a shelter.

Mass. youth take a mission road trip to Central PA

Diocese of Massachusetts youth arrive in the "Land of the Endless Mountains."
During the April school break, the Diocesan Youth Council spent a work week at Trinity Church in Renovo, one of the more isolated congregations in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania.

"This mission trip has helped me realize that I don't need to go far to make a big difference," Billy Zhang, of the Episcopal Boston Chinese Ministry at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, reflected after the trip.

The youth did some painting at the church and cleared a neglected garden in the church yard.  While in Renovo, they also got to know some of their local peers, and they visited a local hospital and nursing home.

Bikers get blessed:
On May 2, motorcyclists from as far away as Hartford, Conn., and Laconia, N.H., rode in to All Saints' Church in West Newbury to be blessed.

It was the church's first--and hoped to be annual--Blessing of the Motorcycles.

"When I came out of church and saw all these happy people on our lawn, it gave me chills of joy.  We are blessed to have such a wonderful welcoming community," parishioner Sally Eames said.

Volunteers collect and pack supplies for Haiti earthquake survivors.
Mansfield packs "Backpacks for Haiti":  The Church of St. John the Evangelist in Mansfield on May 8 took up a special collection:  backpacks filled with supplies for earthquake survivors in Haiti.

"We are a small parish and probably almost everyone gave something for the backpacks," parishioner Diane Simoni reports by e-mail.  "Our doors were open to the community and at least 12 people came in that rainy Saturday bringing completed bags or multiples of various supplies."
