Episcopal churches welcome you this holy Lent

At All Saints Parish in Brookline, they'll be making bread while thinking about how to make time for the things that are sustaining.

In Newton, they're giving up, giving away and giving over, as three churches gather for coffee, conversation and community on Saturday mornings devoted to "Giving in Lent."

In Wareham, the Church of the Good Shepherd is "Simply Making Room" with a program focused on cleaning out the clutter.

There will be laying on of hands at Wednesday healing services at St. Bartholomew's Church in Cambridge, along with reflection on Christ's healing miracles.

At St. Andrew's Church in Wellesley, it will be all about "The Spirituality of Food," as it will be at Grace Church in Medford, where they're having a hunger justice campaign.  At St. Mark's Church in Burlington they'll be "Rediscovering Values," while the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston asks "Who is God?" and the Harvard chaplaincy's community wonders "What's Sex Got to Do With It?"

Meanwhile, on Ash Wednesday, the kids at St. James's Church in Groveland are having a winter morning retreat to learn about being caretakers of the earth, and the art they make will hang in the church from Easter Day to Earth Day.

It would seem that there is something for everyone this Lent as Episcopal churches and communities all around the diocese offer these and other special services and devotional activities to help God's people focus on Lenten practices of fasting, giving, study and prayer.

Check out the growing list here, and join with others at a church near you.  All are welcome.

On fixing what's broken:  Last summer, the Episcopal Church's General Convention adopted a resolution, sponsored by Diocese of Massachusetts deputy Ian T. Douglas, that asks the Episcopal Church to devote Lenten prayer and study to our broken economic order, focusing hearts and minds on its renewal.  Check out these resources that the network Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation has compiled to help individuals and groups do this.

Making the connection between environmental stewardship and the economy, Bishop Bud Cederholm recommends a carbon fast this Lent.

"Fasting from carbon in Lent is a spiritual exercise that is personally transformative as well as transforming for the environment and those who suffer now and in the future from the earth's degradation," he says.  He commends the resources provided by the National Council of Churches on its "Eco-Justice Programs" Web page, here, where you can also sign up for the "Capsules" e-newsletter.
PB calls on church to keep praying and giving for Haiti
Presiding Bishop in Haiti

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori (right) and Bishop Jean Zache Duracin of the Diocese of Haiti survey the ruins of the diocese's Cathedrale Sainte Trinite in Port-au-Prince.
The wider Episcopal Church can most effectively help the earthquake-ravaged Diocese of Haiti by praying, contributing to emergency relief efforts and planning how it will help the diocese achieve its rebuilding priorities.

That is the assessment Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori came away with after visiting Port-au-Prince Feb. 8 to survey the damage wrought by the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Bishop Jean Zache Duracin and other surviving members of the diocese need help now, and they need time to discern a plan for the future, the presiding bishop told Episcopal News Service on Feb. 10.

"The challenge is that they're still very much in emergency-response mode and I think will be for some time to come," she said. "They're still not able to get food and water and shelter to everybody who needs it, so that's got to be the immediate focus."

Senior high youth ask 'Who is God to you?'
Worship at high school retreatOne hundred and seven high school youth from around the diocese gathered Feb. 5-7 at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center in Greenfield, N.H., for a retreat experience that the event's organizers described as "transformative."  AdelynroodParticipants from 22 different parishes studied the Bible together, tried out some different forms of worship and had a lot of fun doing it.

"Watching a group of kids who don't know each other come together for two days and have honest Adelynroodconversation about God, their church and faith, knowing its safe to have questions and doubt and wonder--that was transformative, and for a number of kids, that's what happened," the Rev. Kit Lonergan, Director of Youth Ministries, said after the retreat.

While they explored the question "Who is God to you?" the youth on retreat met in small groups for discussion, rocked with the live band on hand for the weekend and took part in activities that ranged from making Communion bread to stringing prayer beads and creating collage journals to doing yoga.  An altar cloth they made transformed a table at the closing Eucharist.

Adult chaperones had their own opportunities to meet together for Bible study and youth mentor training.

The Rev. Dr. Ian T. Douglas
The diocesan community will join in a celebratory send-off for the Rev. Dr. Ian T. Douglas as he prepares for his consecration in April as the 15th bishop of the Diocese of Connecticut.

The celebration takes place on Wednesday, March 3, 6 p.m., at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul (138 Tremont Street) in Boston. The evening's program will lift up Douglas's ongoing commitment to mission and the Millennium Development Goals, with a festive reception to follow.  The suggested donation of $30 per person will benefit the diocese's Jubilee Ministry.  RSVP here.

Formerly the Angus Dun Professor of Mission and World Christianity at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Douglas was also a priest associate at St. James's Church in Cambridge and co-chair of the Diocese of Massachusetts' General Convention deputation.  He was elected on Oct. 24, 2009, to be the next bishop of Connecticut, and, pending consents from a majority of the Episcopal Church's diocesan bishops and standing committees, he will be ordained and consecrated on April 17 at Trinity College in Hartford.

Registration is open for the annual diocesan Spring Learning Event on Saturday, March 6 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston (note the location change from Boston University).

This year's theme of "Claiming Discipleship" will help participants explore how to live into their baptismal covenant:  How do we turn to Christ in our lives?  In our parishes?  How do we teach and encourage others in their own journeys as they follow Jesus?  The Rev. Chip Stokes of St. Paul's Church in Delray Beach, Fla., will be the morning speaker.  After lunch, participants will have their choice of workshops, followed by a closing time with Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE.

Click here to register by Monday, March 1.
